Sexy Boys Go Bare for HIV Awareness

What do these boys have in common? Nothing much except for their unique sexiness and their willingness to take their shirts off to help the cause of Love Yourself in HIV awareness and education.

Kit Guerra has been with the local rugby team, the Volcanoes, as a flanker for around 6 years now. He has modeled for Bench underwear in the controversial calendar and billboard shoot that featured the rugby team’s players. A graduate of Boston University with a major in Advertising, he has started working for Campaigns and Grey. CrossFit training is part of his routine to keep fit and prepare to compete in the 2013 CrossFit Games in June. No, unfortunately he is straight and attached, with a 4-year long girlfriend based in Seattle. He has made it a habit to go for HIV screening regularly. This is his first chance to help out with the advocacy. “There is no need to be scared [about getting tested for HIV]. You get support every step of the way,” he says.

Carlito Rosalindo Jr. is the current Mr. Gay World Philippines title holder, and has been an avid supporter of Love Yourself, joining the advocacy in several events including last year’s Pride March in Makati. He is a trained contemporary, lyrical, folk and jazz dancer from the University of the Philippines where he was part of the UP FIlipinana Dance Troupe, and he has performed professionally for a number of local shows soon after he graduated .  He is currently in Dubai to pursue new opportunities. But before leaving, he obliged to help Love Yourself this time by being part of this campaign.

Jeremy Favia is best known as a celebrity chef on TV5, with his shows “Chef vs. Mom” (nominated for the Best Lifestyle Programme category in the Asian TV Awards) and “Take-Out.” He claims to be a shy person in reality, but somehow landed a career in TV when he was urged by friends to audition for “Ka-Toque” at QTV 11. With “Take-Out” he gets to go around trying out unusual local fare, then prepares his own recipe take from his gastronomic experiences. Currently single, he says if he were to find someone special, “dapat mabait sya, maasikaso. Yung physical, bonus na lang yun. Age doesn’t matter. Number lang ‘yon.” He gets tested regularly. Chef Jeremy has this message for sexually-active people,“If you love yourself, get tested regularly.”

This first-of-its-kind campaign, dubbed Project Indulge, is a collaboration among Love Yourself, award-winning ad agency Campaigns and Grey, and top-rank advertising photographer Jeanne Young. It  features provocative yet tasteful imagery coupled with insightful, witty ‘matter-of-fact’ copy that departs from the usual fear tactics of HIV awareness campaigns. It suggests that people include regular HIV testing as part of their personal grooming routine to stay healthy and sexy. This resonates well with the advocacy’s name, “Love Yourself.”

“Fear is what actually prevents sexually-active individuals to go for HIV testing,” says Chris Lagman, Director for Counseling and Education for Love Yourself. “We wanted to create a more positive impression about HIV testing, and address the stigma behind it. This has been Love Yourself’s approach to awareness, education and counseling. And it has been working for us based on the results we are getting.”

Indeed, Love Yourself seems to have the right formula to reach out to the hidden population. In 2012, there were 2.5 million people reached online, 2,253 of which were tested and the 404 who turned out positive were assisted with treatment. The advocacy boasts of more than 200 trained volunteers who helped make this happen.

Even the number of clients The LoveYourself Hub, a Malate-based clinic, is servicing has increased in numbers over recent months.

In 2013, Love Yourself scales up its efforts with a number of new projects, like the "ultra-discreet" and "ultra-premium" HIV Testing service in Makati Central Business District called, "Love Yourself Platinum". The advocacy is also expanding soon in other key cities which includes Pasay, Cebu and Angeles in Pampanga.

Upcoming schedules will include FREE HIV Testing events in Cebu on February 23 and in Manila on March 10. Interested individuals may visit go.LoveYourself.ph/Cebu and go.LoveYourself.ph/Manila for details.

LOVE YOURSELF, the country's fastest-growing, 100%-volunteer HIV advocacy group, launched its 2013 visual campaign dubbed Project 'Indulge'. It's like no other HIV Awareness drive in the country and probably in the world.

Collaborating on this project are multi-awarded advertising agency Campaigns and Grey, and top-ranked photographer Jeanne Young.
"We wanted to contribute to HIV awareness and encourage HIV testing and we found out that Love Yourself has a good understanding of the target audience and how HIV had become a national epidemic.", explains Ompong Remigio, Chief Creative Officer of Campaigns and Grey.

Makati, Quezon City, Lead in Implementation of World-Class HIV Counseling and Testing Programs

The local Health Departments of Quezon City and Makati lead the pack in actively implementing world-class HIV prevention programs, particularly HIV Counseling and Testing.

In a report published by the World Health Organization in the last quarter of 2012, the Philippines was praised for the use of best methods in containing the epidemic. “Existing interventions draw on international best practices such as peer learning, networked outreach, internet chatting, and connecting risk groups to health services,” the report says. In particular, the report cites a key strength of the Philippine response to HIV which is the different models now made available by different groups in the provision of HIV counseling and testing (HCT).

“ This diversity is a strength of the response in the Philippines, and should be embraced. There is no single, perfect model for delivering HCT because sites vary in terms of potential clients, available resources, and the site’s experience in providing… HCT, ” the report says.

For the past 5 years the country has seen a rapid increase in HIV cases, mostly due to the implementation of effective HCT models that are now able to reach people who in the past did not have easy access to the service.

Assistant Secretary Eric Tayag, head of the National Epidemiology Center of the Department of Health, announced via Twitter on Monday, January 28, 2013, the full-year 2012 numbers of newly diagnosed HIV cases in the country. Three thousand three hundred thirty eight (3,338) new cases were diagnosed in 2012, a 42% jump from last year, and ten-fold rise from just 5 years ago in 2007.

“The rise in numbers is indicative of the success of programs that aim to reach out to those who need to get tested. I have personally seen how passionate and active Makati and Quezon City are in pursuing this, kudos to them!” says Ronnievinn Pagtakhan, founder and president of Love Yourself, a non-governmental organization involved in HIV education, prevention, and counseling.

Makati City, known for its community health programs, has endeavored to champion discreet and premium quality HIV counseling testings that cater to the young professionals of its Central Business District. It has partnered with volunteer group The Love Yourself Project in organizing special HIV testing events. Last November 2012, The Love Yourself Project managed to attract more than 200 sexually active young men at a discreet HCT venue in Makati City. In January 2013, they introduced a special ultra-discreet, by-appointment-only HIV testing event called Platinum HIV Testing, which targets the most discriminating of clients requiring extra care and confidentiality. It is being offered twice a month in an undisclosed location, also in the Makati Central Business District. For maximum discreetness, appointments are set online at http://loveyourself.ph

The Makati City local health department, however, continues to provide free HCT services at the Makati Social Hygiene Clinic for anyone who wants to avail it there, but the “special event” HCTs attract a different set of people.

The Quezon City Health Department (QCHD), on the other hand, employs a group of professional Peer Educators and HIV counselors stationed in three of their Social Hygiene Clinics at Batasan, Project 7, and Bernardo (Cubao). Anyone can visit any of these clinics and avail of free HIV education, counseling, and testing services. Their Bernardo Clinic in Cubao is also referred to as the “Sundown Clinic” because they operate until 11:00 PM to cater to office workers who are free only after 6 PM. QCHD is also active in outreach HCT, wherein they setup mobile clinics next to venues where target at-risk populations hang out, usually entertainment establishments, and offer them free and convenient access to HIV testing on-site.
